A Study on Factors Affecting Problem Gambling among Adults in Korea

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the level of problem gambling and the factors affecting problem gambling among adults in Junnam province Korea. According to previous studies, problem gambling is related to personal, familial, environmental factors and also other types of addictions. This study highlighted leisure, stress, family relationships and problem drinking as independent variables of problem gambling among adults. Subjects for this study consisted of 429 in Junnam province in Korea. The data was collected from the 1st. June to 30th of June 2011. It was analyzed by using the
SPSS/Win 15.0 program. The results of this study are summarized as follows; Firstly, the study showed that stress was the highest variable affecting the problem gambling group. Secondly, according to the order the result showed that gender, problem drinking and family relationship were the highest variables affecting the non-problem gambling group. Notably, 32.3% of respondents were classified as problem gamblers(above 8 point in PGSI) and they were affected by stress. Study
implications in terms of ways of developing an effective intervention program for problem gamblers were discussed.
